Description:
Abstract figurative Photography
Drawing Points, Lines & Dimension on Film
During the 1980s, while living in New York, I was an assistant to Mr. Takahiko Iimura, a Japanese pioneer of experimental film and video internationally-renowned artist.  I was greatly influenced by his works, particularly the 1968 black & white avant-garde film, "Camera Massage”, based on Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan's best-selling book, “The Medium is the Message/Massage", which claims that various media combine together to "massage" the sensorium of the human mind.  Inspired by Iimura, I decided not to use the camara and simply photograph objects, but "massage" the film directly, boiling it in hot water, drying it, then like on a blackboard, using pins, brushes, fingernails and other objects to scratch and draw on the coated material=emulsion, creating a new figurative dimension to these photos.
